The most common tournament and league formats in beach volleyball

Choose the format that fits your tournament – Blyzer generates the schedule, standings and bracket. You can set up any format in the wizard in a few minutes.

Groups + play-off

Pairs are split into groups, play round-robin, and the best advance to a knockout bracket. The most common format for one-day beach volleyball tournaments.

How to: Create tournament → Configure → number of groups and advancing pairs → Generate groups → Generate play-off.

Double elimination

The beach volleyball classic – every pair gets two chances and after the first loss continues in the losers' bracket. Fair and exciting all the way to the final.

How to: Create tournament → Configure → double elimination play-off → Generate bracket.

Round-robin

Every pair plays every opponent and the standings and set ratio decide the final order. Ideal for smaller tournaments of up to 6 pairs on a single court.

How to: Create tournament → Configure → 1 group, no play-off → Generate matches.

Knockout bracket

Lose and you are out – a fast format for a large number of pairs, optionally with a 3rd-place match. Seeding by ranking or by draw.

How to: Create tournament → Configure → no groups, play-off only → Seed pairs → Generate bracket.

Summer league

A season for the whole summer – rounds by calendar, standings with points and set ratio; pairs arrange their matches themselves. For beach clubs, lidos and corporate leagues.

How to: Create league → Configure → number of rounds and pairs → Generate schedule → enter results as you go.

Not sure which format to pick?

Our guides compare the formats, give recommendations by number of pairs and courts, and share tips on seeding and the timetable.

Tip: With 12 pairs and 2 courts, go for 3 groups + play-off; with 8 pairs, double elimination.

Beach volleyball – FAQ

Can groups be played to 1 set and the play-off to 2 winning sets?

Yes. You set the number of sets needed to win separately for the groups and the play-off – for example one set to 21 in the groups and best of three in the bracket.

How is the group order decided when pairs are tied on points?

Head-to-head result, set ratio and point ratio decide – you set the rules according to your tournament and the standings follow them automatically.

Can one player play in both the men's and the mixed category?

Yes. Each category is a separate tournament or a separate group, so a player can compete in several pairs.

How much does it cost?

The basics are free – you can create and run a tournament or league at no charge.
