Double elimination: guide, rules and tournament management in Blyzer
Guide

Double elimination is hugely popular among esports players and organisers, because one bad match doesn't mean the end of the tournament. Players get a second chance in the Lower bracket (the losers' bracket), which makes for fairer results.

Here's a simple guide to setting it up in Blyzer so it runs without any stress.

1 Basic tournament setup

After logging in to Blyzer, choose Create new tournament.

  • Name and game: Fill in the name (e.g. Blyzer CS2 Open) and choose the game.
  • Tournament type: In the drop-down menu, select "Double elimination".
  • Number of teams: The system works best with powers of two (4, 8, 16, 32 players). With any other number, the system automatically adds "Byes" (free passes).

2 Managing participants and seeding

Add teams or individuals to the tournament.

  • Seeding: Seed the favourites in the top spots – that way the best players won't meet in the very first round.
  • Public registration: Once registration closes, just click "Generate bracket".

3 How does the automation in Blyzer work?

You don't have to draw anything by hand – the system takes care of everything:

🏆
Winners Bracket
The upper bracket. Everyone starts here. The winner of each match advances.
🔄
Losers Bracket
The lower bracket. The loser from the upper bracket is moved here automatically – and gets a second chance.
⚡
Grand Final
Upper bracket winner vs. lower bracket winner. A second loss = the tournament is over.

4 Entering results and progression

During the tournament, just open the match detail and enter the score.

  • Instant update: Once a result is saved, Blyzer redraws the bracket – players see their next opponent in real time.
  • Grand Final: The upper bracket winner can start with a 1:0 advantage – configurable in the system.

⭐ Pro tips for organisers

⏱
Plan for the time: Double Elimination takes almost twice as long as Single Elimination. Factor that into your schedule.
👁
Visual check: Before the first match, check the "Bracket" tab – make sure the teams are placed correctly.
💬
Explain it to the players: Add a short note to the tournament: "Lost? Don't leave! Your team has been moved to the lower bracket, where you're still fighting for the final."

Automation in Blyzer frees you from redrawing the bracket after every match. You take care of the game, the system takes care of the logic.
