The most common athletics competition formats

Choose the format that fits your event – Blyzer prepares the start list, results and standings. You can set up any format in the wizard in a few minutes.

Race

An individual race – every competitor starts for themselves and the ranking is decided by time, distance or points. For running races, road races, school olympics and meets.

How to: Create race → Configure → categories and events → open entries → enter performances → show rankings.

Season-long league

A series of races over the season – competitors or clubs collect points for their placing in each round and the overall standings add up. For running cups, inter-club and school leagues.

How to: Create league → Configure → number of rounds and points system → Generate schedule → enter results as you go.

Club tournament

A team competition – schools or clubs collect points for their competitors' placings and the team with the highest total wins. Typical for school athletics days and team combined events.

How to: Create tournament → Configure → 1 group, no play-off → add teams → enter points.

Knockout heats

Heats, semi-finals and finals as a knockout bracket – the best from each heat advance. Suitable for sprints and relays with a large number of starters.

How to: Create tournament → Configure → no groups, play-off only → Seed competitors → Generate bracket.

Not sure which format to pick?

Our guides compare the formats, give recommendations by number of competitors and events, and share tips on the race timetable.

Tip: For a one-off event choose a race; for a series of races over the season, a league with points.

Athletics – FAQ

Can the race be split by categories and events?

Yes. You set age and gender categories (e.g. U12 boys, U18 girls, men) and each has its own start list and rankings.

How are rankings decided – by time or by points?

Depends on what you set. In running events time decides, in jumps and throws it is distance, and in combined events or leagues the sum of points for placings.

Is it suitable for school athletics competitions too?

Yes. A school olympics or athletics day gets entries, a start list and results in minutes – including a competition between classes or schools.

Can competitors enter themselves?

Yes. Send a link to the race and competitors or their coaches fill in the entry themselves, you just confirm the start list.

How much does it cost?

The basics are free – you can create and organise an athletics race, tournament or league at no charge.
