The most common tournament and league formats in Australian football

Choose the format that fits your competition – Blyzer generates the schedule, standings and bracket. You can set up any format in the wizard in a few minutes.

Groups + play-off

Teams are split into groups, play round-robin, and the best advance to the finals series. The most common format for one-day AFL 9s tournaments.

How to: Create tournament → Configure → number of groups and advancing teams → Generate groups → Generate play-off.

Round-robin

Every team plays every opponent and the ladder decides the final order. Ideal for smaller tournaments of up to 6 teams or short community competitions.

How to: Create tournament → Configure → 1 group, no play-off → Generate matches.

Knockout bracket

Lose and you are out – a fast finals series for a large number of teams, optionally with a 3rd-place match. Seeding by ladder or by draw.

How to: Create tournament → Configure → no groups, play-off only → Seed teams → Generate bracket.

Double elimination

Every team gets two chances – after the first loss it continues in the losers' bracket. Just like the AFL finals system, it gives the top teams a second chance.

How to: Create tournament → Configure → double elimination play-off → Generate bracket.

Season-long league

A season over several weeks – home/away matches, rounds by calendar, a ladder with points and percentage. For clubs, community and corporate leagues.

How to: Create league → Configure → number of rounds and teams → Generate schedule → enter results as you go.

Not sure which format to pick?

Our guides compare the formats, give recommendations by number of teams and available time, and share tips on seeding and field scheduling.

Tip: With 6–8 teams and one day, go for 2 groups + play-off; with several weekends, choose a league.

Australian football – FAQ

Is it suitable for a small AFL 9s tournament too?

Yes. A social or corporate AFL 9s tournament on a smaller field gets its own schedule, results and ladder – Blyzer sets it up clearly in a few minutes.

How is the ladder calculated?

You set the points for a win, draw and loss yourself (e.g. 4 – 2 – 0 as in the AFL). Ties on points are decided by score, so the ladder follows the rules of your competition.

Can I enter the score as goals and behinds?

You enter the result as total points for each team (e.g. 10.8 = 68 points) and the ladder takes it into account, including the score difference.

How much does it cost?

The basics are free – you can create and run an Australian football tournament or league at no charge.
