The most common baseball tournament and league formats

Choose the format that fits your competition – Blyzer generates the schedule, standings and bracket. You can set up any format in the wizard in a few minutes.

Groups + play-off

Teams are split into groups, play round-robin, and the best advance to a knockout bracket. The most common format for weekend baseball and softball tournaments.

How to: Create tournament → Configure → number of groups and advancing teams → Generate groups → Generate play-off.

Round-robin

Every team plays every opponent and the standings decide the final order. Ideal for smaller tournaments of up to 6 teams on a single field.

How to: Create tournament → Configure → 1 group, no play-off → Generate matches.

Knockout bracket

Lose and you are out – a fast format for a large number of teams, optionally with a 3rd-place game. Seeding by regular-season results or by draw.

How to: Create tournament → Configure → no groups, play-off only → Seed teams → Generate bracket.

Double elimination

Every team gets two chances – after the first loss it continues in the losers' bracket. A hugely popular format in baseball, used by major youth tournaments too.

How to: Create tournament → Configure → double elimination play-off → Generate bracket.

Season-long league

A season over several months – home/away series, rounds by calendar, standings with win-loss records. For clubs, youth and corporate softball leagues.

How to: Create league → Configure → number of rounds and teams → Generate schedule → enter results as you go.

Not sure which format to pick?

Our guides compare the formats, give recommendations by number of teams and fields, and share tips on seeding and game timing.

Tip: With 6–8 teams and two fields, go for 2 groups + play-off; for a whole season, choose a league.

Baseball – FAQ

Is it suitable for softball and T-ball too?

Yes. A softball or kids' T-ball tournament uses the same schedule, results and standings as baseball – Blyzer handles school and corporate tournaments just as well.

How are baseball standings calculated?

You set the points for a win and a loss yourself – you can use a classic win-loss record (W-L) or a points system according to the rules of your competition.

What if a game ends in a tie after the innings limit?

You enter the tie as a regular result and the standings apply your points settings. In the play-off you can set the game to be decided in extra innings.

How many teams do I need for a tournament?

3 teams are enough for a round-robin. With 6–8 teams we recommend 2 groups + play-off; with more teams, double elimination.

How much does it cost?

The basics are free – you can create and run a baseball tournament or league at no charge.
