The most common tournament and league formats in water polo

Choose the format that fits your competition – Blyzer generates the schedule, standings and bracket. You can set up any format in the wizard in a few minutes.

Groups + play-off

Teams are split into groups, play round-robin, and the best advance to a knockout bracket. The most common format for weekend youth water polo tournaments.

How to: Create tournament → Configure → number of groups and advancing teams → Generate groups → Generate play-off.

Round-robin

Every team plays every opponent and the standings decide the final order. Ideal for smaller tournaments of up to 6 teams in a single pool.

How to: Create tournament → Configure → 1 group, no play-off → Generate matches.

Knockout bracket

Lose and you are out – a fast format for a large number of teams, optionally with a 3rd-place match. A draw is decided by a penalty shoot-out.

How to: Create tournament → Configure → no groups, play-off only → Seed teams → Generate bracket.

Double elimination

Every team gets two chances – after the first loss it continues in the losers' bracket. A fairer format for tournaments where you want everyone to play more matches.

How to: Create tournament → Configure → double elimination play-off → Generate bracket.

Season-long league

A season over several months – home/away, rounds by calendar, standings with points and goal difference. For clubs, youth categories and masters leagues.

How to: Create league → Configure → number of rounds and teams → Generate schedule → enter results as you go.

Not sure which format to pick?

Our guides compare the formats, give recommendations by number of teams and pool time, and share tips on seeding and the timetable.

Tip: With 6 teams and one pool, go for round-robin; with 8 or more, 2 groups + play-off; for a whole season, a league.

Water polo – FAQ

Can I set up points with draws as well as penalty shoot-outs?

Yes. In groups and leagues you can allow draws (e.g. 3-1-0 or 2-1-0); in the play-off you enter the result after the penalty shoot-out and the winner advances automatically.

Is it suitable for kids' tournaments on a smaller field too?

Yes. The number of players, length of quarters and pool size are up to you – 5 vs 5 mini polo and classic 7 vs 7 both get their own schedule, results and standings.

Which format should I choose for a youth tournament with 8 teams and one pool?

We recommend 2 groups of 4 teams and placement play-offs – every team plays 4 to 5 matches and the schedule fits into a weekend.

How much does it cost?

The basics are free – you can create and run a tournament or league at no charge.
